January-September 2021 China’s aluminum industry operation

  1. Steady growth in production. According to the National Bureau of Statistics data, from January-September, China produced 58.84 million tons of alumina, 29.15 million tons of electrolytic aluminum ingot and 44.78 million tons of aluminum finished products. which represents increase of 7.6% for alumina, 7.2% for aluminum ingot and 10.7% for aluminum finished products with a two-year average growth of 2.9% for alumina, 5.1% for aluminum ingot and 8.8% increase for aluminum finished products.   
  2. Inventory of aluminum ingots slightly declined. According to industry analysts, the inventory of aluminum ingots in late September is 820,000 tons, fluctuating within the normal level, down 34% from the highest point of the year.   
  3. Prices rose dramatically . According to the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association statistics, since this year, aluminum prices rose sharply. The average spot price from January to September is 18,491 yuan/ ton which increased 32.5%. The spot price on September 13 was 23,410 yuan / ton , which set a new highest score in last 15 years.
  4. Importation of Bauxite and alumina decreased while aluminum finished products exportation increased . According to the General Administration of Customs of China, from January to September, China imported 81.532 million tons of bauxite, 2.694 million tons of alumina, representing a year-on-year decrease of 7.2% and 9.4%. 636,000 tons of aluminum scrap were imported, up 0.6% year-on-year; 1.917 million tons of unwrought aluminum were imported, representing a year-on-year increase of 12.9%. aluminum exports 3.943 million tons, stands for an increase of 16.1% year-on-year.
